While on my bicycle tour down the West Coast, I only had a couple of close calls. One involved a UPS truck on a narrow road, and another a dangerously timed crosswind as I was dropping down into a gulch near Gallaway, CA. I was already at a pretty good speed thanks to a light descending grade and a tailwind, but dropping into this gulch threw me just over 50mph. The gust floated up underneath me and for a few moments, I teetered on the edge of disaster. I remember floating on the pedals as the bike started to thrash and wobble, somehow keeping on top long enough to ride out the wobble and ease into the slope on the other side of the gulch. I took a seat on the edge of the cliff, where I took this photo and Layers Before Time, in shock and gratitude at the near-miss.
